The Dreamcatcher Series

Bedroom Suite

This Bedroom Suite is designed to capture the simplicity of modern design combined with the legend of the dreamcatcher.
The melding of recent European influence and ancient native American culture while including painting or stencilling on furniture surfaces which has again become popular has influenced me while designing this series.
I have purposely made each piece an individual design while tying the group together with simple details.

The inspiration for this line of furniture came to me from Kandykizzez
who first introduced me to Dreamcatchers
and from Debbie Travis on her TV show
The Painted House

The Legend of the Dreamcatcher

This legend has been handed down through generations, it's author is unknown, the legend goes like this.......

Once many many years ago a spider was quietly spinning his web in his own space.  His space was next to the sleeping space of Nokomis, the Grandmother.  Each day Nokomis watched the spider as he quietly went about the spinning of his web, she marveled at the beauty of such a fine piece of work.  One day she was disturbed by her grandson.  "Nokomis-iya" he shouted as he approached. He bent to pick up a slipper and headed toward the spider.
As he raised his arm ready to bring the slipper crashing down upon the spider Nokomis the Grandmother whispered, "No keegwa, don't hurt it".
Her grandson was confused. "Nokomis, why do you protect a spider?" he asked.

The old silvered grandmother's answer was a silent smile.
When the boy left, the spider went to Nokomis and he thanked her for saving his life.
He said, "For many days and nights you have watched me spin my web, and, you have admired my work. In return for saving my life, I am going to give you a gift". With those words, the spider turned away, spinning as he left Nokomis to her thoughts.

That night as the moon shone it's rays glistened on the delicate, magical, silvery web that swayed to and fro in the breeze from the window.  "See how I spin?" he said.  "See and learn, for each web will snare  bad dreams, only the good one can pass through. This, Nokomis, is my gift to you. Use it and remember the good dreams, for they shall become treasured memories as the bad dreams become hopelessly entangled in the web where they will remain until the first rays of the sun dissolve them.
